Hamlet is the solo project of Cincinatti’s Chris Wales, formerly of the band Lonely the Seabird. On this new EP he is joined by the ace rhythm section of Jason Short and Dan Nolan (both of Dayton’s mighty Joseph Airport, and frequent collaborators with Rectangle Creep). This power trio format is augmented on a few tracks with cello or keys, for jangle-rock record that gently tugs at your heartstrings with beautiful, melodic arrangements and understated yet passionate vocals.
Hamlet’s earlier records, including last year’s Camp Underground, were primarily solo affairs — which certainly suits the downcast, rainy day vibe of the project — but the full-band nature of Light Under Repair is very appealing and shows off Hamlet’s Guided by Voices influence (think Isolation Drills at its jangliest) more prominently.
Each track is a gem, but I have to single out album closer “Lost in the Underground” as a favorite, with its prominent bass riff, twinkling xylophone-like keys, and anthemic ending. And it delightfully culminates with an almost prog-flavored keyboard solo in the spot you’d expect a blazing hot guitar solo.
Light Under Repair is the strongest Hamlet release yet and will hopefully garner the band some new fans. It’s out now on Bandcamp and CD from South African label Subjangle. Listen below:
